New Executive Director Hired at the Youth Emergency Shelter of Peterborough

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 29, 2013

Suzanne Galloway to take the helm at Y.E.S.

Peterborough’s Youth Emergency Shelter will see a change in leadership next month when local health and community development advocate Suzanne Galloway takes over as Executive Director at the local shelter and transitional support agency.

“Youth issues have always been very close to my heart,” Galloway said. “I’m very excited about putting my skills to work at Y.E.S. to support youth and families in crisis in our community.” Galloway steps into her new role on May 6.

Current Executive Director Walter Johnstone is retiring after heading up the organization since 2006.

“It’s been a very rewarding seven years, but it’s time for me to pass the reins,” said Johnstone, who plans to spend more time at home after he wraps up his responsibilities at Y.E.S. “After this, you’ll probably find me in my workshop,” he said.

Galloway comes to Y.E.S. with a background in health promotion and community development in the non-profit sector.  After a stint at Y.E.S. in 2006, Galloway worked at the Peterborough AIDS Resource Network before moving to her most recent position of Health Promoter with the Peterborough County/City Health Unit.

“The next few years are going to be a challenging time for social services and for emergency housing in particular,” said Galloway, referring to upcoming changes to the way the province funds emergency shelters and related social services. “It will be our task to find new, creative ways to build support and partnerships in the community to ensure that Y.E.S.’s vital services for youth and families can continue to grow.”

“This is an exciting time for Y.E.S.” said Board Chair Don Bocking. “We are certainly sorry to see Walter go, but the Board is very confident that Suzanne will do an excellent job of leading the organization as it moves into its second decade of service to the community.”

Galloway will remain in her position at the Health Unit until her new role starts.
