Volunteers make it possible to offer more to the youth and families we serve.
To ensure volunteering is a rewarding experience for our volunteers and for YES, we endeavor to provide appropriate training and orientation to our potential volunteers. Due to recent staffing changes at YES, we are unable to offer adequate training to new volunteers at this time. We appreciate your interest; please check back again soon.
Please review the following volunteer opportunities for when we are able to accept new volunteers:
Duties: Sort through donations of clothing and housewares to determine what is useful to YES clientele (so we can actually find what we have and give it out!).
Skills Needed: Decision making skills and a tireless enthusiasm for organizing stuff.
Availability: Monday to Friday- 3 Hour shifts. Regular, routine commitment required
Duties: Assist shelter staff with basic administrative duties, maintain fundraising database (SUMAC), answering phones, entering client files into HIFIS database, filing etc.
Skills Needed: Ability to use a computer and software, photocopier, and comfort with telephone.
Availability: 1. Foodshare delivery – First Wednesday of each month 11am-1pm. 2. YES Food Cupboard Shifts – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Noon-3pm and Saturday 12-2pm. Regular, routine commitment required
Duties: 1. Assist with the unloading and sorting of the monthly food delivery. 2. Assisting clients who visit the YES Food Cupboard.
Skills Needed: Ability to lift 20 pounds; customer service skills, ability to use a computer and software (service use is recorded in a database). Willingness to learn about housing challenges and resolutions (bed bugs, tenants rights, etc.) strongly preferred.
Availability: As needed.
Duties: Design posters for events or client information. Layout annual report, quarterly newsletter or other documents. Find photos for newsletter and other materials.
Skills Needed: Graphic design skills, attention to details, ability to meet deadlines.
Availability: Various hours (as needed)
Duties: Complete basic maintenance/light custodial activities around the shelter as needed. This includes Special Building Projects (i.e. new shelving); Ongoing Maintenance (filter replacement, painting, drywall repair); Team Projects (painting a room, weeding the garden); Larger Projects (ie. help install new windows). Will work with Maintenance Lead Worker and provide support to them as needed.
Skills Needed: Experience and knowledge of how to do any of the above duties or willingness/focus to be a 2nd set of hands to work alongside YES’ maintenance lead or other volunteers.
Availability: Meal Prep: 4-7pm on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. Regular, reliable commitment required or various times for special events.
Duties: Cook (or help cook) dinner; bake/cook with residents; and/or cook for special events (brunch for residents, soup fundraiser, volunteer appreciation, etc.).
Skills required: Ability to cook a meal for up to 30 people (menu and ingredients provided). Safe Food Handlers Certification required for meal prep or baking/cooking with residents. Some kitchen skills needed for cooking for special events. Involving residents in the cooking activities would require knowledge of how to do so safely (caution with knives, heat, etc.) and ability to prevent and manage challenging behaviours.
Availability: Wednesday Evenings for 3 hours and activities schedules at other times
Duties: Assist staff and accompany clients to the local YMCA for recreational activities, as well as other recreational activities or outings (e.g.: accompanying a family to the zoo).
Skills needed: Experience working with groups of marginalized youth; group management in public spaces (and sometimes conflict de-escalation); interest in sports/fitness.
Availability: Monday evenings 6-9pm – Regular, reliable commitment needed.
Duties: Support local community artists/YES staff to offer creative expression opportunities for YES youth clients (or work with staff to share your artistic talent).
Skills needed: Experience working with groups of marginalized youth; interest in the arts.
Availability: As needed.
Duties: Help plan, organize and run special fundraising events throughout the year including:
- Raising the Roof Campaign (December-March)
- Soup Stock (November 14)
- Tour ‘n Tea (March)
- Spring Event (April)
Skills Needed: Enjoy interacting with the public, knowledge and enthusiasm about YES’s services, organizational skills an asset.
