HELP OUT

At the Youth Emergency Shelter of Peterborough, we rely on the generosity of local businesses, organizations, families, and individuals to assist us with various aspects of delivering our services through direct financial support, in-kind donations and volunteerism. Please read on for information on how you can assist us with helping youth and families in our community.

Donate

Your financial contribution to the Youth Emergency Shelter of Peterborough will help us provide young people and families with emergency and transitional housing, as well as support programs that allow our clients to continue schooling, secure employment, find permanent housing and develop confidence through life skills programming. Donations can be made online through Canada Helps (just click the button in the left bar) or mailed or dropped off directly to the shelter. Y.E.S. is a registered charitable organization and can provide a tax receipt for your donation. If you would like to know more about supporting Y.E.S. financially, contact Walter Johnstone at 705-748-3851 or wjohnstone@yesshelter.ca.

Wish List

Y.E.S. welcomes in-kind donations of new or gently used personal and household items. The following is a list of the items most commonly required. We make every effort to pass unneeded items on to other organizations. However, it is a good idea to call the shelter before dropping off in-kind donations, to ensure that we have a current need and/or the space to store your donation.

  • Seasonal clothing for youth
  • New cotton socks and undergarments, t-shirts and hoodies
  • New bed linens (twin and double), pillows, and blankets (When clients leave the shelter, they can take their bedding from their bed with them. So we are always in need of new linens.)
  • New towels and face cloths
  • Shampoo, soaps, toothpaste, toothbrushes
  • Feminine hygiene products (tampons)
  • Brushes, combs, hair products, and shaving items
  • Diapers (all sizes)
  • Gently-used childrenĄ¯s toys, books, and clothing
  • Gently used household appliances
  • Gently used couches, chairs, etc
  • Metal beds and sealed mattresses. (Bed bugs infestations are on the increase in Peterborough and across North America. Metal beds and sealed mattresses have proven effective in reducing infestations.)
  • Gift cards for grocery, clothing, hardware and department stores
  • Small tools for basic toolboxes
  • Batteries
  • Light bulbs

Volunteer

Volunteering is a staple of any community service organization and Y.E.S. is no exception. Volunteers contribute valuable skills, energy and creativity. At Y.E.S., volunteers can assist with fundraising events, movie or sport night activities, hot lunch program, and some seasonal activities. Some volunteers have contributed hard skills like carpentry, plumbing, and drywall work. If you are interested in volunteering at Y.E.S. please contact Placement Supervisor Wyatt Lamoureux at 705-748-3851 or wlamoureux@yesshelter.ca.

Student Placements and Co-ops

Student Placements

Y.E.S. has offered challenging learning opportunities for students in social service oriented programs since 2004. Placement students are an integral part of the daily shelter operations at Y.E.S., and contribute highly-valued skills, ideas, and approaches. Students have come from both university and college programs, such as nursing, drug and alcohol, corrections, child and youth worker, social services, community and justice services. If you are a student and are interested in learning more about a placement at Youth Emergency Shelter, please contact Placement Supervisor Wyatt Lamoureux,at 705-748-3851 or wlamoureux@yesshelter.ca.

Student Coop Programs

Many high school students needing to fulfill hours for a cooperative learning program have successfully completed these at Y.E.S. While learning about shelter work and the varied requirements of community service agencies, co-op students man the reception desk, deal with clients past and present, work with Y.E.S. staff, and interact with the general public. A co-op placement at Y.E.S. is a challenging and rewarding position requiring a number of different skill sets. If you are interested in learning more about cooperative student placement at Y.E.S., please contact Placement Supervisor Wyatt Lamoureux at 705-748-3851 or wlamoureux@yesshelter.ca
