Alone with my thoughts

2021 Report – You’ve helped us through

Posted on June 2, 2022 in Current News

There is no denying that 2020 and 2021 have been rough on everyone. Through it all, thanks to you, we were here every step of the way helping young people and families who needed support out of homelessness.

I keep thinking about Nate.

When Nate came to shelter, he was alone, directly from his last foster home, with an untreated schizophrenia diagnosis.

He wasn’t doing well at first, but YES Staff were able to get him medical attention and he quickly started on medication that helped him enormously. Now, just two years later, he’s on his own living a stable and happy life in the community and has even reconnected with his birth family again.

But what would have happened if we had turned Nate away that night?

Thanks to you, we didn’t have to. And Nate now has been able to pull himself out of a very tough spot. You enable us to be there for young people and families in Peterborough who need help.

And there’s so much more you help us do.

This work is important because everyone deserves basic supports when they’re struggling. We’ve put together a quick snapshot of what we’ve been able to do in 2021. It’s important to us that you know what amazing work you are enabling when you give to YES. This work includes:

Your support is instrumental.

None of our programs could exist without donations from the community. Even our Emergency Shelter which is open 24/7 for youth and families who would otherwise have nowhere to sleep. It’s you who keeps YES going. Thank you for recognizing the need, allowing us to do this important work, and ultimately empowering young people and families in Peterborough to recover and live well.

Nate is doing great now. Living in his own place, reconnected with his birth family, and dreaming of travelling one day to Dubai.
