Student Placements

Thank you for your interest in doing your placement with the YES Shelter for Youth and Families of Peterborough! YES has offered challenging learning opportunities for students in social service oriented programs since 2004. Students have come from both university and college programs, such as nursing, drug and alcohol, corrections, child and youth worker, social services, community and justice services. Placement students are an integral part of the daily shelter operations at YES, and contribute highly-valued skills, ideas, and approaches. Our placement students are constantly and actively participating in the Case Management of our clients to support their needs and meet their goals. Students are expected to assist our staff with any front-line needs and they will have a very hands-on experience. In addition, there will be further responsibilities that ensure the smooth operations of the organization. Due to the nature of this work, we do prefer to take second year placement students. Please fill out an Expression of Interest Form below and attach your resume for consideration.

Please note that given the orientation required, we generally only entertain placements that have a minimum of 500 hours. A shorter placement may be possible if the student has a particular project or skills that will benefit YES. Placement Deadlines:

  • For January-April Placements, please apply by the last week of October.
  • For September-December Placements, please apply by the last week of June.

Certification and Training Requirements:
Placement students working with residents in any capacity will be required to have completed the following trainings and provide certification if accepted by YES:

  • Non-Violent Conflict Intervention Training
  • ASIST Training
  • CPR/First Aid is an asset, but not required.

Placement students are required to have open availability during their placements months. Students will rotate shifts, usually working Monday-Friday and occasional weekends.
