Bent, Not Broken: Ellie’s Journey to Hope
As the first warm rays of spring sunlight push away winter’s chill, there’s a feeling of new beginnings in the air – a reminder that, like the world around us, we too can change.
At YES Shelter for Youth and Families, we see that change happen every day. Today, we want to share one young woman’s story of resilience, growth, and transformation – made possible because of people like you.
A Childhood Interrupted
Ellie* had always been a bright, curious child. Her warm green eyes seemed to smile even when her lips didn’t, and she could lose herself for hours in books about far-off places beyond her small south-end apartment.
But when her parents’ marriage began to fall apart, Ellie’s world changed overnight. Her father’s substance use and her mother’s emotional withdrawal created instability at home—instability that soon turned into violence.
Feeling unsafe and alone, Ellie gravitated toward friends who seemed to understand her pain. They offered her drugs, which dulled her sadness for a while. But soon, those “gifts” came with strings attached, and the expectation of repayment brought a new kind of danger into her life.
Ellie was at serious risk of being trafficked.

The Turning Point
That whisper – and Ellie’s courage to act on it – brought her to YES Shelter. When she arrived, she was exhausted in both body and mind. But beneath the layers of trauma and hardship, her resilience was still there, waiting to be uncovered.
A Community Rallies Around Her
It took a coordinated effort to help Ellie begin her journey to recovery. YES staff worked closely with local agencies and healthcare providers to get her the immediate care she needed. Her support worker spent one-on-one time helping her process her experiences, honor her strengths, and imagine a future beyond survival.
Through our Carriage House program, Ellie explored her feelings through art and poetry. She resumed her studies through our partnership with P.A.C.E., working toward her high school diploma while receiving ongoing counselling. And perhaps her most remarkable step – Ellie chose to end her drug dependency and entered a live-in treatment facility to continue her healing.
The Bigger Picture
Sadly, Ellie’s story is far from unique. We are seeing more people facing homelessness at younger ages due to family breakdown, domestic violence, and substance use – many as young as 16.
At YES, we believe every young person deserves the safety, support, and opportunity to rebuild their lives. But we can’t do it without you.
That’s why your support is more vital than ever.
