An experience like no other; a student’s time at YES this summer

This post comes to us from Canada Summer Jobs student, Eric Espinueva. Eric worked at YES for July and August, 2019

I was hired to work at the YES Shelter for Youth and Families for an eight week Canada Summer Job Position. I had the honour to work as a Resource Assistant, with an abundance of shelter work incorporated into the role.

Always a ton to do

My main role was to create graphics for things like donation call-outs, infographics with stats on youth homelessness in Peterborough and assist in organizing events such as the annual general meeting.

But my role was not solely graphic design and coordination, I also did shelter work such as cleaning and organizing the donation room, preparing food for the people staying at YES and assisting other shelter workers.

The YES fam

The YES Shelter has an open, respectful and judgment-free environment; it is an experience like no other. Everyone who works at the shelter is extremely compassionate, emphatic and caring to all those who approach YES.

The YES employees are not only coworkers but also act as a family. Everyone is interconnected, based on the common incentive to mitigate youth and family homelessness in Peterborough.

Eric also created this info-graphic featured on the front page of our website

YES provides tremendous support for the community, and the community really comes together to support YES! I saw people donating an abundance of food and clothing every day I worked there.

Some real motivation

Many of the individuals and families who stay at the shelter are really struggling. Listening to their stories gives an eye-opening perspective that pushed me to work as hard as I could to support the shelter to care for them.

Although my time at the YES Shelter for Youth and Families was short, I do hope that I had an impact on the organization and for the youth and families who stayed there.  After finishing my degree at Trent University, YES would be an ideal place to work.

Thanks for all your hard work Eric! If you think you could be interested in working here and becoming apart of the YES fam, keep an eye on our employment page.
