REPORT BACK to our community

Posted on May 30, 2023 in Current News

YES provides safety and help out of homelessness to young people and families in Peterborough. Our community is a big part of these supports because your donations are a big part of how we continue this work. We want you to know about the difference we’ve been able to make, thanks to our incredible community, in 2022.

Emergency Shelter for Youth and Families

YES runs the only shelter for youth and families Peterborough. Everyone staying in shelter gets a warm bed, three meals each day, and any of the basics they need to be comfortable.

Life Skills Program in Shelter

The program encourages youth to learn the skills they need to live a stable life on their own. This includes:

  • Food and Nutrition
  • Relationships and conflict management
  • Wellness and self care
  • Peer support
  • Budgeting and Money Management
  • Art Therapy

Outreach Program for Youth and Families

Outreach Staff work with youth and parents experiencing homelessness in Peterborough to address the issues that caused their homelessness as well as find and keep housing.

This includes support like:

  • Connecting individuals to the financial aid they are eligible for
  • Helping youth and parents access clinical and mental health supports
  • Working together to contact local landlords and view units
  • Assistance navigating the health care system

AND 36 youth avoided homelessness through our Homelessness Prevention Program.

RISE Youth Housing Program

The chance that a young person will exit homelessness and recover from their past increases substantially if they get into a transitional housing program.

Transitional housing is affordable housing with the supports young people tend to need as they grow and develop into healthy adults. Young people in RISE move into a place of their own, and is connected to a YES worker who helps them through emotional difficulties, mentors them to learn life skills, and ensures they connect with the help they need to stabilize.

Thank you for your help in this work. Many of these stories are extremely difficult, but our clients are resilient, and all of the people who come to us for help can recover and live a stable life with the right support.
